Por parte de sua mãe, não existia testemunho e nem incentivo a santidade. O chamado que ela tinha no coração era ao matrimônio, então casou-se com o Conde Ludgero e teve um filho, o qual se abriu à vocação que Deus o chamava, e iluminado pelo testemunho da sua mãe Ema, se tornou sacerdote e depois bispo.
Ao ficar viúva, Ema discerniu e decidiu consagrar sua viuvez ao Senhor, numa vida de oração expressa na caridade. Muitos conventos e abadias foram construídas através de sua generosidade, porém ela viveu no meio da sociedade, administrando seus bens para o beneficio do próximo.
Santa Ema passou os últimos momentos de sua vida numa Abadia, após 40 anos de dedicação a Deus, falecendo em 1045.
Depois de muito tempo abriram seu túmulo, e encontraram o seu corpo todo em pó, exceto a sua mão direita estava intacta. Aquela mão que ela mais dava. Um sinal de que a santidade passa pela caridade.
